SPINNING WHEELS: A spinning wheel is so personal. I love my Schact wheel. I sit in the living room and I am happy when I look at it. I need to spin. If I can’t, I tend to start twisting strips of paper. I highly encourage you to learn to spin before you buy a wheel. Then spin on several wheels. Please don’t buy used wheels on E-Bay sight unseen. The Cadillac of wheels. I spin on my Schact wheel 6 hours a day for the shop. In double drive it is really powerful. I spun single treadle for 25 years on an Ashford and finally converted to double treadle with this wheel. I need double treadle for the power but you do have to sit far forward. The wheel includes 4 bobbins, tensioned lazy kate, strap, oil, booklet, scotch tension, and double drive bands. Update 2005: I believe in this wheel more than ever after selling it to many extremely satisfied students. The steep price increases of the foreign wheels make this seem a lot more affordable. Buy the best wheel -have it for life. |

These are the wheels that we all learned on. I bought an Ashford traditional at Straw into Gold in 1977. I was at CCAC and Straw into Gold was just down the street on College Ave. It was my comfort to put it together with a borrowed screwdriver and sit in my studio apartment and spin everything they had at Straw into Gold. Ashford has six wheels and an electric spinner, the Traditional, the Traveler, the Joy portable wheel, the Elizabeth, the Country Spinner, and the Kiwi. They all come in kits to assemble, except the Joy wheel which is pre-assembled. They come in many permutations and finishes. *The Joy wheel is the best choice of the Ashford wheels. It has 4 built in speeds. It folds and travels beautifully. It comes laquered and put together and it's adorable. The best wheel for the smaller spinner
